라스의 크림 수프 (Lars' Flødesuppe)

2007년 9월, 덴마크 최북단의 어느 시골 마을. 어느 집에 한 아저씨가 병든 차남 라스(Lars)와 철부지 장남 헨릭(Henrik)과 함께 셋이서 살고 있었다.
알 수 없는 병에 걸린 라스는 소원이 하나 있었다. 가난에 쩔쩔매는 홀아버지는 몸이 점점 야위는 라스에게 뭐든 해주고 싶어 하였다.

- 아버지 : 먹지 않으면 몸이 더 약해질 거야!

아버지는 감자 수프를 내주었지만, 라스는 섭취를 거부하였다. 뭐든지 먹고 싶은 거 말하라는 아버지의 절규에 계속 거부하던 라스가 기어드는 소리로 말했다.

- 라스 : 아빠... 수프... 크림 수프 먹고 싶습니다!

수프를 먹고 싶다는 라스의 말에 아버지와 헨릭은 깜짝 놀랐다.

- 라스 : 하지만 괜찮아요! 마음 내키면 먹을게요!

귀한 손님이 나오거나 생일날에만 한 사람당 한 개만 먹을 수 있는 귀한 수프. 그것도 조금 멀리 떨어진 마을에 있는 스케일(덴마크 최북단 마을, Skagen)의 작은 가게까지 가야 살 수 있었다. 아버지는 즉시 자전거로 45분을 달려 스케일까지 달려가 라스가 먹고 싶어 하는 크림 수프를 사 왔다. 겨우 2개. 아버지는 냄비로 크림 수프 2개를 끓으셨지만, 라스는 자신이 좋아하는 수프조차 먹을 수 없을 정도로 힘이 빠지고 말았다.

상황 파악을 할 줄 모르는 형 헨릭이 수프를 보자 먹고 싶어서 참을 수 없었다. 헨릭은 위에 올려놓은 수프를 세 숟가락 가량을 먹었다.

그때 아버지가 집에 들어오셨다.

- 아버지 : 헨릭, 너 뭐 하냐?

한 입 베어먹은 수프를 본 아버지는 깜짝 놀랐다.

- 헨릭 : 아, 아버지!

아버지는 빗자루로 헨릭의 엉덩이를 한 대 때린 후에, 마음이 아파 울고 마셨다. 엉덩이를 한 대 맞은 헨릭은 방에 가서 잘못을 후회하며 울었다. 그때 동생(라스)이 방문을 열고 위로해 주었다.

- 헨릭 : 라스, 미안해! 잘못했어!

라스는 미소를 지으며 형(헨릭)을 용서해 주었다.

- 라스 : 괜찮아. 겨우 세 숟가락만 먹은 건데!

만약에 엄마가 살아계셨으면 엄마한테 일러서 형의 뺨을 세게 꼬집어 정신을 차리게 했더라면 다시는 실수를 저지르지 않았을 텐데, 그날 밤 두 형제는 서로 껴안은 채 눈이 퉁퉁 부을 정도로 울었다.

라스(Lars) : 9세(1998년생). 헨릭의 남동생으로, 알 수 없는 병에 걸렸다.

In September 2007, a rural village in the northernmost part of Denmark. There was an old man living in a house with his sick younger son, Lars, and his immature eldest son, Henrik.
Lars, who was suffering from an unknown illness, had one wish. His poverty-stricken single father wanted to do anything for Lars, who was becoming increasingly thin.

- Father: If you don’t eat, your body will become weaker! {Hvis du ikke spiser, bliver din krop svagere!}

The father offered potato soup, but Lars refused to eat it. Lars, who had repeatedly refused his father's cries to tell him what he wanted to eat, spoke in a crawling voice.

- Lars: Dad... soup... I want to eat cream soup! {Far... suppe... jeg vil spise flødesuppe!}

Father and Henrik were surprised when Lars said he wanted to eat soup.

- Lars: But it's okay! I’ll eat it if I feel like it! {Men det er okay! Jeg spiser det, hvis jeg har lyst!}

It was a rare food that can only be eaten once per person when a special guest comes or on a birthday. To buy it, he had to go to a small store in Skagen, a village a bit far away. The father immediately rode his bicycle for 45 minutes to Skagen and bought only two cream soup that Lars wanted to eat. The father boiled two cream soups in a pot, but Lars was so weak that he couldn't even eat his favorite soup.

When Henrik, who had no sense of understanding the situation, saw the soup, he couldn't resist eating it. Henrik ate about three spoons of the soup on top.

At that time, my father came home.

- Father: Henrik, what are you doing? {Henrik, hvad laver du?}

My father was surprised when he saw the first bite of soup.

- Henrik: Ah, father! {Åh, far!}

After hitting Henrik on the buttocks with a broom, his father cried and drank because of his heartache. After getting a slap on his butt, Henrik went to his room and cried, regretting his fault. At that time, his younger brother (Las) opened the door and comforted him.

- Henrik: Lars, I'm sorry! It was my fault! {Lars, jeg er ked af det! Det var min skyld!}

Lars smiled and forgave his brother (Henrik).

- Lars: It’s okay. You only ate three spoons! {Det er okay. Du spiste kun tre skeer!}

If their mother had been alive, Lars would have told her mother to come to his senses to pinching Henrik hard, so he would never have made his mistake again. That night, the two brothers hugged each other, and cried so much that they were swollen.
