2016년 8월. 프랑스 파리 센 강의 다리 밑에서 생활하는 노숙자가 살고 있었다. 그는 Jules Durand(쥴 뒤헝)이라고 불리는 남자 사람인데, 원래 그는 쇼핑몰에서 일하던 가게 직원이였다. 하지만, 같이 일 했던 친구가 행방불명되어 5년 만에 일을 그만두었다. 그는 현재 노숙자가 된 지도 10년이 되었다. 따라서 그는 2006년부터 노숙자가 되어버린 소리. 설상가상으로 부모님이 돌아가셨고 여동생마저 베트남 남자와 결혼 해 베트남으로 이주했다.

 

- 여동생 : 오빠, 잘 있어. 나는 행복을 찾아 떠날거야. 두번 다신 보지 말자!

 

한 순간에 모든 것을 잃고 세상을 등진채 떠돌이로 지내다가 우연히 센 강의 다리를 발견했다.

 

- 쥴 뒤헝 : 여기라면 비바람도 피할 수 있고, 새로운 인생을 시작할 수 있어!

 

그때부터 쥴은 그곳에 정착해버렸다. 지금의 삶이 불편하다고 생각한 사람들도 있었지만, 딱히 그렇지 만도 않았다. 쥴은 청소부로 생활하면서 혼자 먹고 살만큼은 번다.

 

그리고 2년 전에 운좋게 만난 똑똑하고 친절한 3살 연하의 여자를 한 명 만나 같이 살고 있다.

 

- 쥴 뒤헝 : 오늘 바게트 2개 사왔어!

 

- 여자 : 어머! 그럼 오랜만에 크림 치즈 발라 먹을까? 

 

그 여자는 쥴에게는 마치 수호천사 같은 사람이었다. 조금 춥긴 하지만, 비바람도 피할 수 있고 기다리는 사람도 있다.

 

- 쥴 뒤헝 : 이렇게 된 거 후회는 안 해?

 

- 여자 : 살면서 후회할 일이 어디 한 두가지야? 그래도 널 만난 건 후회 안 해.

 

그는 여자와 함께 좁은 텐트 안에서 행복하게 살았다. 그러나, 그들에게도 무서운 사건이 벌어졌다. 

 

- 쥴 뒤헝 : 으앗?! 피해!

 

- 여자 : 엄마야!

 

갑자기 우릴 향해서 돌을 던지는 알 수 없는 놈이 있었다. 던진 돌의 크기는 어른 주먹만했다. 만약에 맞았으면 저승사자에게 끌려갈 수 도 있었다.

 

여자는 자신이 아끼는 핸드폰을 보며 울먹였다.

 

- 여자 : 이 핸드폰 내가 4년 전에 사서 몹시 귀하게 여긴건데... 이게 없으면 어떡해 음악을 듣고 사진을 찍지...

 

여자의 핸드폰은 그 돌에 맞아서 박살 나고 말았다. 그것도 화면 전체에 금이 간 것이다. 아마도 근처에 사는 젊은이들 짓일 것이다.

 

그날 밤 여자와 대책을 의논했다.

 

- 여자 : 이대로 가만히 있으면 우리 목숨이 위험해져. 경찰서에 가는 게 좋은 방법인거 같아?

 

- 쥴 뒤헝 : 그래.

 

결국 쥴과 여자는 경찰에 신고를 하기로 결론을 냈다.

 

세금도 안 내는 이들이 경찰에 뭔가를 부탁한다는 자체가 꺼림칙했지만 솔직히 이번 사건에는 쥴도 슬슬 화가 나기 시작했다.

 

평범한 사람들에게 그들은 사회의 기생충 같은 존재로밖엔 안보일 것이다. 이들은 집도 없이 텐트에서 잔다는 것에 불평하는 사람들도 꽤 많았다.

 

하지만 이들은 체력이 좋지 않아 힘으로는 무리고, 맞으면 죽을 수도 있는 돌을 던진 것에 도무지 참을 수 없었다.

 

다음 날 09시(오전 9시)에 경찰서로 향했다.

 

- 쥴 뒤헝 : 어젯밤에 웬 돌이 날아왔는데...

 

- 경찰관(여성) : 그러셨군요. 자세히 말씀해 주세요.

 

경찰의 반응은 순찰인력을 늘리겠다는 구두 약속 뿐이었다.

 

- 여자 : 이걸로 된 걸까?

 

- 쥴 뒤헝 : 아마도...

 

이들을 귀찮아 하고 있는 기색이 역력했다. 정말 순찰을 늘려줄지 매우 의심스러웠다.

 

여전히 매일같이 돌이 날아들었다.

 

- 쥴 뒤헝 : 어떻게 좀 해주세요! 이래서는 참을 수 없습니다!

 

- 경찰관(여성) : 저희도 순찰을 돌고는 있습니다만...

 

기물 파손으로 수사를 했으면 좋겠지만, 그런 상황이 1달 정도 지속되었다. 마침내 텐트를 다른 장소로 옮겨야 겠다고 생각했을 때였다. 

 

- 여자 : 꺄아악! 또...

 

- 쥴 뒤헝 : 아니?

 

또 다시 돌이 날아들었다. 그런데 그 날은 분위기가 사뭇 달랐다. 지금까지는 돌만 날라왔었지만, 그 날은 범인들이 모습을 드러냈다.

 

- 범인들 : 야, 너네 둘. 오늘은 돌만 가지곤 안 되겠다.

 

- 쥴 뒤헝 : 으브레(Aubrey)! 도망가자!

 

건장한 10대 남학생 6명. 두 사람이 어떻게 해볼 수 있는 상대가 아니었다. 쥴 뒤헝과 여자의 힘으로는 도저히 저항할 수 없는 상대였다. 그들은 필사적으로 도망쳤다. 하지만, 불행하게도...

 

- 쥴 뒤헝 : 커헉!?

 

쥴은 범인의 발로 뒤통수를 얻어 맞았다.

 

- 범인 1 : 왜 귀찮게 도망을 쳐?

 

쥴은 체력이 좋지 않아서 금방 잡히고 말았다. 결국 범인 한 명에게 얻어맞고 쓰러졌다.

 

- 쥴 뒤헝 : 으브레(Aubrey)... 잡히기 전에 너라도 살아... 빨리 도망쳐...

 

- 범인 2 : 입 닥쳐, 이 ㅂㅅ아!

 

- 범인 3,4,5,6 : 지금 니가 남 걱정 할 처지냐? 이 빵꾸똥꾸 놈아!

 

범인들은 쥴의 윗옷과 바지를 모조리 벗기고 그를 샌드백 삼아 마구 구타했다.  쥴은 결국 상처투성이가 되어 병원으로 옮겨지고 말았다.

 

의사선생님은 최선을 다했고, 으브레도 열심히 기도를 했다.

 

- 으브레 : 쥴!!!

 

결국, 쥴 뒤헝은 48살의 젊은 나이에 두개골 골절에 의한 뇌좌상으로 죽고 말았다.

 

그로부터 20일 후, 범인들이 체포되었다.

 

- 형사 : 왜 쥴 뒤헝 씨를 죽인거냐?

 

- 범인 1 : 스트레스 좀 풀려고... 죽일 생각은 없었습니다.

 

프랑스에서 사람을 죽이면 30년 이하의 징역이 선고된다. 이들은 미성년자라 뉴스에서 실명이 언급되지는 않았지만...

 

- 네티즌 1 : 노숙자 살인사건 범인이 파리한글학교 학생이라는데?

 

- 네티즌 2 : 이름도 금방 나오겠네. 인터넷에 마구 퍼뜨려주자.

세상이란게 그렇게 만만하지는 않다. 잠깐 동안은 숨길 수 있겠지만, 사람을 죽인 죄는 평생 너희를 따라다닐 거다. 결혼, 취직은 물론이고 가족한테도 영향이 있을 거야. 인과응보라고, 옛말이 틀린 게 하나 없다. 쥴은 여자에게 작별인사를 했다.

 

- 쥴 뒤헝 : 으브레, 그동안 고마웠어. 앞으로는 노숙하지 말고 돈 열심히 벌면서 부자가 되서 평화롭게 살다 와. 미안해!

To make matters worse, his parents died and his younger sister also married a Vietnamese man and moved to Vietnam.

 

- Sister : Goodbye, Jules? I'm leaving in search of happiness. Let we never meet again!

 

Losing everything in an instant and living as a wanderer with his back to the world, he accidentally discovered a bridge over the Seine.

 

- Jules Durand : Here you can escape the rain and the wind and start a new life!

 

From then on, Jules had settled there. There were people who thought that the present life was uncomfortable, but it was not so. Jules works as a janitor and earns enough to live on her own.
