17 퇴학 후, 새로운 다짐 (After expulsion, New resolution)

2024년 1월 5일, 호주 시드니. 홀로 외출하는 남자가 어떤 학교 건물을 보며 회상하였다.

- 남자 : 와, 정말 오랜만이다.

 

과거 - 2008년 4월 25일. 낮에 과거의 남자는 학교 운동장에서  친구들과 싸우고 폭력을 저질렀다.

[알렉스 터너(Alex Turner), 16세]

- 선생님 : 알렉스 터너(Alex Turner), 너는 진짜 나쁜 녀석이야! 넌 지금 당장 퇴학이야!

집으로 돌아온 알렉스. 어머니는 노발대발 하시면서 그를 호되게 질책하셨다.

- 터너 부인(알렉스의 어머니) : 너 도대체 왜 학교에서 친구들이랑 싸웠니? 아까 담임 선생님한테 연락이 왔어!

알렉스는 어떻게 해야 좋을지 야단맞는 중에도 어머니에게 말씀드렸다.

- 알렉스 터너 : 저는 이제 어떻게 해야 좋을까요?

그러자, 터너 부인은 화가 났지만, 꾹 참으며 큰소리로 말했다.

- 터너 부인 : 그래! 지금부터 내가 네 외삼촌에게 전화해서 너를 그 집으로 보낼게! 두번 다신 나쁜 짓 하지마!

그리하여, 다음 날부터 알렉스는 외삼촌 집으로 보내지게 되었다.

 

2008년 4월 26일, 오전 9시. 알렉스는 뉴캐슬(시드니 북쪽으로 한참 떨어진 도시)에 있는 외삼촌 집에서 상담을 들었다.

- 외삼촌 : 알렉스, 일어났니?

- 알렉스 터너 : 네! (외삼촌께 아침 인사) 안녕히 주무셨습니까?

탁자에 앉은 외삼촌은 맞은 편의 의자를 가리키며 말했다.

- 외삼촌 : 앉아라!

알렉스가 맞은 편 자리에 앉자, 삼촌이 말씀을 하셨다.

- 외삼촌 : 너 어제 내 여동생으로부터 전화가 왔다. 어제 학교에서 친구들이랑 싸웠구나.

- 알렉스 터너 : 네, 죄송해요!

- 외삼촌 : 너 앞으로 절대 싸움 같은 나쁜 짓 하면 안된다는거 기억해라!

- 알렉스 터너 : 네. 명심하겠습니다.

 

2008년 5월 1일, 오후 7시. 저녁식사 시간.

오랜만에 어머니가 뉴캐슬에 있는 자기 오빠의 집에 방문했다.

- 터너 부인 : 원래는 성적도 좋고 공부도 잘하는 아인데, 아빠가 6개월 전에 암으로 죽은 후부터 변해 버렸어!

- 외삼촌 : 너 자퇴했다고 학업 포기하면 안된다. 외삼촌과 지금부터 IGCSE(영국의 중고등 과정인 GCSE를 케임브리지 대학에서 국제학생을 위한 국제 커리큘럼으로 개조한 것.)로 졸업 시험보는 걸고 하자!

알렉스는 귀찮다고 거절했다.

- 알렉스 터너 : 싫습니다. 공부 하는 것보다는 차라리 돈 버는게 더 좋은 것 같습니다.

알렉스는 외삼촌(어머니의 오빠)의 말을 무시하고 가버렸다.

- 터너 부인 : 오빠, 말 안듣는 알렉스 때문에 면목없구나.

 

2008년 5월 3일, 오후 10시 59분. 트램 정거장에서 NDS로 게임을 하고 있었는데, 갑자기 시각이 오후 11시가 되면서 휴대폰이 울렸다.

- 휴대폰 : (외삼촌의 목소리) 밤 11시야, 집에 돌아와! 통금시간이야!

알렉스는 집에 들어가기 싫어서 궁시렁거렸다.

- 알렉스 터너 : 밤 11시면 뭐! 아직 더 놀수 있는 시간인데...

알렉스의 외삼촌이 정해준 통금시간은 밤 11시라서 매일 밤 11시가 되면 외삼촌은 휴대폰으로 알렉스에게 돌아오라는 말을 하셨다.

 

2008년 5월 11일, 해밀턴(Hamilton) 기차역. 외삼촌은 알렉스에게 등짝을 치며 집에 가자고 말했다.

- 외삼촌 : 너 지금 이 시간까지 기차타고 돌아다녔냐?

집에 들어온 알렉스는 삼촌으로부터 IGCSE 교재를 받으며 훈계를 들었다.

- 외삼촌 : 남자 대 남자로 나랑 얘기 좀 해보자. 이번이 진짜 마지막 기회야! 한 번만 더 내 약속 어기면 진짜 집에서 쫓아내거나 너 그냥 노숙하게 밤 11시부터 아침 6시까지 문 잠궈버릴거다.

외삼촌의 훈계를 듣는 알렉스.

- 알렉스 터너 : (혼잣말) 선생님도 아니고 울 엄마 오빤데 이렇게 까지 신경도 써주시다니 참 쓸데없는 간섭 잘하시는군!

- 외삼촌 : 넌 할 수 있어!

- 알렉스 터너 : 눈 딱 감고 공부 진짜 해야겠다.

그 길로 알렉스는 IGCSE 공부를 시작하였다. 물론 밤 11시가 되기 전에 즉시 집으로 돌아오는 것도 잊지 않았다. 그렇게 열심히 공부한 지, 6개월의 세월이 흘렀다.

 

2008년 11월 1일.

- 알렉스 터너 : 외삼촌.

- 외삼촌 : 너.

- 알렉스 터너 : 저 합격입니다.

- 외삼촌 : 거봐. 너 그렇게 열심히 하니까 시험에 통과했잖아!

외삼촌은 기특해진 알렉스를 보며 칭찬하였다. 하지만, 아직 끝은 아니였다.

- 외삼촌 : 이제 다음 단계로 가자!

알렉스는 다음 단계가 뭐냐고 물었다.

- 알렉스 터너 : 그게 뭔데요?

- 외삼촌 : 직업 교육 훈련. 다른 아이들보다 더 빨리 취직해서 사람 되야지!

 

외삼촌의 지시대로 알렉스는 직업훈련을 받으러 직업훈련센터에 입학했다. 강의를 열심히 듣고, 자신의 미래를 향해 절대로 뒤돌아보지 않으며 올바른 길을 향한 알렉스.

시간은 많이 흘러, 2009년 9월 9일. 마침내, 그는 어머니와 함께 과일 주스를 파는 작은 가게를 하나 열었다.

딸기와 오렌지를 믹서로 갈고 있는 장면을 본 외삼촌은 알렉스가 취직했다는 것에 대해 웃으며 그를 인정해주었다.

 

시간은 더 많이 흘러, 현재 - 2024년 1월 5일.

알렉스는 길을 걸으며 과거의 일을 회상한 것이다. 그렇게 그는 자신을 올바른 길로 인도해준 외삼촌에게 감사의 마음을 가진 것이다.

- 알렉스 터너 : (마음으로 외삼촌에게 하는 말) 외삼촌, 저를 올바른 길로 인도해 주셔서 감사합니다. 앞으로는 영원히 행복하게 살겠습니다.

January 5, 2024 - Sydney, Australia. A man walking alone looks at a school building and reminisces.
[South Sydney High School]
- Man: Wow, it's been a long time.

Past - April 25, 2008. During the day, the man in the past got into a fight with his friends in the school playground and committed a violent act.
[Alex Turner, 16 years old]
- Teacher: Alex Turner, you're a real bad guy! You're going to be expelled from school right now!
Alex returned home. His mother was furious and scolded him harshly.
- Mrs. Turner (Alex's mother): Why on earth did you fight with your friends at school? Your homeroom teacher called me earlier!
Alex told his mother what to do even while being scolded.
- Alex Turner: What should I do now?
At that, Mrs. Turner was angry, but held it in and spoke loudly.

- Mrs. Turner: Yes! From now on, I will call my big brother and send you to his house! Don't do anything bad again!
So, from the next day, Alex was send to his uncle's house.

 

April 26, 2008, 9am. Alex had a consultation at his uncle's house in Newcastle(a city far north of Sydney).
- Uncle: Alex, are you awake?
- Alex Turner: Yes! (to his uncle) Good morning?
My uncle, sitting at the table, pointed to the chair opposite him and said.
- Uncle: Sit down!
When Alex sat down, his uncle said.
- Uncle: You got a call from your mother yesterday. You got into a fight with your friends at school yesterday.
- Alex Turner: Yes, I'm sorry!
- Uncle: Remember that you should never fight or do anything bad from now on!
- Alex Turner: Yes. I will keep that in mind.

May 1, 2008, 7pm. Dinner time.
Mrs. Turner visited her brother's house in Newcastle for the first time in a long time.

- Mrs. Turner: He was originally a good student with good grades, but he changed after his father died of cancer 6 months ago!
- Uncle: You shouldn't give up on your studies just because you dropped out. Let's take the IGCSE(the international curriculum for international students at Cambridge University, which is a British secondary school course) exam with you from now on!
Alex refused, saying it was annoying.
- Alex Turner: I don't want to. I think it's better to make money than study.
Alex ignored his uncle's (his mother's older brother) words and left.

May 3, 2008, 10:59 PM. He was playing a game on his NDS at the tram stop when suddenly the time turned to 11 PM and his cell phone rang.
- Cell phone: (Uncle Gerald's voice) It's 11 PM, come back home! It's curfew!
Alex was reluctant to go home and was groaning.
- Alex Turner: What, 11 PM! There's still time to play...
Alex's uncle's curfew was 11 PM, so every night at 11 PM, he would tell Alex on his cell phone to come back.

 

May 11, 2008, Hamilton train station. His uncle slapped Alex on the back and told him to go home.
- Uncle Gerald: Have you been riding the train all this time?

Alex, who came home, was scolded by Uncle Gerald while receiving his IGCSE textbook.
- Uncle Gerald: Let's talk to me as a man. This is really your last chance! If you break my promise one more time, I'll kick you out of the house or just lock you up and make you sleep outside from 11pm to 6am.

- Alex Turner: (talking to himself) He's not even a teacher, he's my mom's older brother, and he's really meddling in things!
- Uncle Gerald: You can do it!
- Alex Turner: I really need to study without complain.
Alex started studying for the IGCSE right away. Of course, he didn't forget to return home right away before 11pm.

Six months had passed since he studied so hard.

 

November 1, 2008.
- Alex Turner: Uncle Gerald.
- Uncle Gerald: Alex.
- Alex Turner: I passed.
- Uncle Gerald: See. You passed the exam because you worked so hard!
Uncle praised Alex, who was amazed. However, it wasn't the end yet.
- Uncle Gerald: Now let's go to the next step!
Alex asked what the next step was.
- Alex Turner: What is that?
- Uncle Gerald: Work training. You must have to get a job faster than other students!

Alex entered the work training center to receive work training as instructed by his uncle. Alex listened to the lectures diligently, never looked back, and headed toward the right path for his future.
Time passed - September 9, 2009. Finally, he opened a small shop selling fruit juice with his mother.
Seeing the scene of blending strawberries and oranges in a blender, Gerald smiled and acknowledged Alex's employment.

Many time passed, and now - January 5, 2024.
Alex walked along the street and reminisced about the past. That's how he felt grateful to Gerald, his uncle for guiding him on the right path.
- Alex Turner: (Saying to his uncle in his heart) Thank you for guiding me on the right path. I will live happily ever after.
